Being a #bosslady is hard work. We would know–we live that life all day every day, even when we’re tired, frustrated, and want nothing more than to retreat and have a bowl of ice cream…or three. Being a #bosslady is about much more than running our business and helping other women succeed. It’s an attitude and an outlook.

Think you might be a #bosslady? Here are six lady entrepreneur traits that are dead giveaways.

1. You Show Up Early and GSD

Some of us #bossladies are not morning people. Not at all. But, despite our desire to luxuriate in our down-feathered, lavender-scented beds, we get our asses up and answer the countless emails we received while we were sleeping. For those of us who have home offices, supportive spouses, and families, we probably also pray for time to eat a proper breakfast before our dogs and kids need us. No matter our situation or how late we stayed up schmoozing at that networking event last night, we don’t hit snooze. We drag our butts to events and meetings even when we feel like crap. We stick to our commitments and do what we say we will do. Because we know that half the battle is showing up.

2. You Have Work/Life Balance…So, Ok, Sometimes You Hit Snooze

One of the most important aspects of #bosslady life is knowing when to draw the line. As a female entrepreneur, someone likely wants or needs something from you at all times. And there is literally ALWAYS more you could be doing to help your business succeed. But you know that if you go at it full-on every single day of your life, you’ll burn out. So you make sure to take the time you need to recharge and have a life outside of work. While we often work while traveling, all work and no play makes #bosslady a lonely, grumpy, bitter girl.

3. You Fake It Until You Make It

As a #bosslady, you have probably found yourself in a situation where you were solidly out of your depth. Whether that’s a high-paying client who wants a service you want to offer but don’t have the infrastructure yet to support. Or, a party where everyone else is celebrating their millions in profit, while you still haven’t broken the 200K mark. It happens to the best of us. The difference between success and failure sometimes has to be the illusion of success, or a winning attitude that serves as smoke and mirrors. The truth is that at some point in your career, you won’t know what you’re doing and you’ll feel silly and smalltime. That’s ok. Even powerhouses like Oprah and Sheryl Sandberg have felt this way. Hold your head high and fake it until you make it.

4. You Use Your #Bosslady Power To Help Others

Once you have “it made”, a true #bosslady uses her power for good. She helps others through mentoring, using fair hiring practices and wages, and supporting the work/life balance of her employees. She isn’t afraid of other women who are making their way in the business world and realizes that there is enough room at the table for everyone. If you’re a true #bosslady, you know that passing on your wisdom and paying it forward to others will only bring you greater success and admiration from your peers. #Bossladies are not egotistical or elitist, and they don’t turn their nose up at women who are just starting their journey. Because there is a special place in hell for women who don’t help other women.

5. You Know the Power of Branding and Self-promotion

Many #bossladies love to have their pictures taken and are totally comfortable being the center of attention. But some of us are natural introverts and feel just a little cheesy every time we post shameless self-promotion on social media. Despite our individual preferences, we all know the power of telling our story and representing our brand in person and online. We are “learned extroverts” and when we are feeling shy, we put on our big girl panties and introduce ourselves anyway. Because if we don’t promote our business, who will? True #bossladies know the power of an engaged Instagram following!

6. You are Graceful Under Pressure

Every now and then, the sh*t is going to hit the fan. It’s inevitable, and it usually happens when us #bossladies least expect it. A huge project falls through because one of our most trusted employees neglected to follow our directions. We get pulled from the conference speakers panel because a bigger name confirmed at the last minute. Our dog sitter cancels a day before our much-needed vacation. And what do we do? We handle it. We accept it. We reassert our confidence around our employees. We cope with grace because we know that if we respond poorly to adversity, we are taking a step back. Then we have a margarita and let the trash talk fly in private, where no one could possibly hear us! After all, we are human and we get frustrated, too.

While #bossladies can be very different, these common traits unite us. No matter which industry we are dominating or the country in which we reside. Are you a boss lady? If you relate to most of these six lady entrepreneur traits, our guess is YES. We love working with other powerful females, so make sure to reach out to us if you need any help with your marketing or want to collaborate on a project!
